Climate Risk Is Making the American Dream Uninsurable

Table of Contents

“Uninsurable” is the new reality for millions of American homes.

Home insurance isn’t just getting expensive. In many states, it’s flat-out disappearing—leaving hard working families at risk.

Over 35 million US homes—about 25% of all properties—face soaring premium or canceled policies due to extreme weather risk.

Without insurance, families face full financial loss if their home is damaged.

Again and again, I’m seeing families priced out of protection. Why?

Insurance companies are refusing coverage for homes in high-risk climate zones.

Millions of mortgages are being rejected. In California. Florida. Texas. And the list continues.

I’ve seen the housing disaster up close during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. How is today different?

Climate disasters → No home insurance → Housing market instability → Another financial crisis → Human lives affected.

Last year was the fourth-costliest year on record due to extreme weather—close to $200 billion lost in storms, wildfires, droughts, flooding, tornadoes, tropical cyclones, and so on.

And 2025 is tracking even worse.

→ When homes cannot be insured, they cannot be financed.

→ When homes cannot be financed, people cannot move, rebuild, or build wealth.

→ When that happens at scale—it is not just a climate problem. It is a systemic financial risk.

We are no longer insuring the American Dream.
We are defaulting on the safety net that once made homeownership possible.

And yet—most conversations about climate finance still center on Wall Street, not Main Street.

That’s why I am bringing this issue to the forefront at the Emerald Climate Fintech Summit, co-hosted along with Nicole Casperson, during NYC Climate Week on September 19th.

We need more than headlines.
We need real collaboration among regulators, insurers, innovators, communities on the ground.

Join us if you believe in protecting homes, not just portfolios.

Because protecting people starts with protecting where they live. Link in comments to attend.
