  3. Design Feedback Loops. Make your metrics visible, reviewable, and adjustable. AI systems don’t drift when humans stay in the loop. They drift when oversight becomes optional.
  4. Measure in Layers. Track not just what the model predicts, but how it impacts people, workflows, and decisions downstream. Real intelligence is systemic. It measures both output and outcome.

AI metrics shouldn’t just track performance. They should protect purpose.

Try this short AI Alignment Audit to check whether your systems are learning what you actually want them to:

  1. Pick one AI or automated system you rely on → analytics, recommendation, or content generation.
  2. List its key success metric. What is it rewarded for → clicks, conversions, speed, or volume?
  3. Run a quick “If–Then” check. If this metric improves by 100%, does my overall mission improve too? If not, what’s missing from the equation?
  4. Add a balancing metric. Pair every performance goal with a counterweight → for example, pair speed with accuracy, engagement with trust, or automation with human review.
  5. Track outcomes for a week. Notice how the conversation changes when you measure both performance and impact.
  6. Document the insight. Share what you learned with your team. The best discussions often start with one surprising mismatch between what a model rewards and what a mission requires.

This micro-audit doesn’t require new software. Just curiosity. Every time you test alignment, you teach your systems what “good” really means. That’s how risk turns into wisdom.
